Few games are as stuffed with things to do as Skyrim. It’s a game you can play for a hundred hours, and still not see everything. In this feature we’ll show you some of the game’s best kept secrets, along with videos to tell you how to uncover them. If you think you’ve seen everything the ancient homeland of the Nords has to offer, think again.
1. Use your shield as a weapon
It’s the most time-consuming stat to upgrade in Skyrim, but if you take the time to get your block skill up to master level, you can use the Shield Charge perk to knock enemies off their feet.
2. Get a follower that never dies
When you start the A Daedra’s Best Friend quest, Barbas the talking dog will follow you until you visit Clavicus Vile’s shrine. Ignore the quest and he’ll stay with you forever, and he can’t die.
3. Shoot arrows with style
It must have taken this guy hours to work out the exact trajectory of this shot, but there’s no denying that it’s the coolest way to assassinate someone in Skyrim. They never saw it coming.
4. Unleash the Wabbajack
This video tells you how to find a dangerous Daedric staff that has a random effect every time you use it, from turning enemies into bunnies to summoning demons that attack you.
5. Steal without getting caught
Fancy looting a merchant’s shop, but fear the long arm of the law? Simply pop a basket on their head and merrily pilfer their goods while their vision is obscured. Cheap, immoral, hilarious. Although as we discovered, it’s actually really bloody hard to do.
6. Get someone to earn you coin and cook for you (otherwise known as marriage).
Any NPC that you’ve done a quest for will become ‘friends’, and you can then marry them following the process shown here. They’ll even open a shop for you and cook your dinner.
7. Get free archery training
You can exploit Faendal’s friendship and get free archery training from him. Simply pay him for the training, make him a follower, then lot your coin back from his inventory. Naughty.
8. Ride a unique horse
There are two special horses in Skyrim that can sprint longer than the regular ones you buy at stables. To get one called Frost, complete the quest Promises To Keep, detailed in the video.
9. Never run out of soul gems
Azura’s Star is one of Skyrim’s most useful Daedric items. It’s a refillable soul gem, essentially. You can use it to charge or enchant weapons, and it won’t disappear from your inventory.
